Shaw represented at USMC Ultimate Challenge Mud Run Published Sept. 29, 2009 By 2nd Lt. Emily Chilson 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Airmen from Team Shaw recently competed in the 16th Annual United States Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge Mud Run Sept. 19 at Fort Jackson's McCrady Training Center. The team of Airmen, calling themselves the "Frontier Runners," is made up of Airman 1st Class Phil Collar, 20th Fighter Wing staff judge advocates office, Airman 1st Class Daniel Flesher, 609th Air Communications Squadron radio maintenance technician, 1st Lt. Randi Miles, 20th Comptroller Squadron, and Bronwyn McKnew. The Frontier Runners ran the 4.2-mile course in about 55 minutes and 58 seconds, finishing in the top 10 percent. "We had to work together as a team to make it over huge walls, and low crawl under nets through mud that stung our eyes and left grit in our mouth," said Airman Flesher. "In the end we crossed the finish line covered in mud, sweat and even some blood." According to Fort Jackson officials, about 1,800 four-person teams, or 7,200 participants ran, jumped, climbed and crawled through the challenge this year. "Participating in the mud run has been a great experience for me for two years now," Airman Flesher said. "I highly encourage anyone who enjoys athletic competition, outdoors and team building to participate in next year's event." To see a photo of the Frontier Runners, please click here.
