Shaw's fire department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association for Fire Prevention Week 2009 from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10 with the campaign "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned."

A fire prevention trailer, extinguisher trainer and vehicle display is scheduled to be at Shaw's Base Exchange Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The BX is providing specials and sales on fire-protection equipment as well.

"Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned" occurs at Shaw's Child Development Center Oct. 8 from 8:30 - 11 a.m., where kids can get pictures with Sparky, Shaw's fire department canine mascot, and the fire engine truck.

This year's campaign focuses on ways to keep homes fire safe and prevent painful burns. Additionally, fire safety educators will be teaching local residents how to plan and practice escape from a home in case a fire occurs.

"The most common types of burn injuries result from fire or flame burns, scald and contact burns," said Tech. Sgt. Jim Tadlock, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department fire inspector. "Burns are painful and can result in serious scarring and even death."

"When we take extra caution in our homes to ensure that the curling iron is out of children's reach or pot handles are turned away from the edge of the stove, such injuries are entirely preventable," he said. "Keeping our homes safe from fire and preventing devastating burn injuries is a healthy change we can make happen."
