Shaw hosts Save a Life Program Published Sept. 1, 2009 By Staff Sgt. John Gordinier 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Driving while intoxicated is an Air Force-wide concern so Shaw is hosting a "hard-hitting," alcohol-awareness program called "Save a life," which begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 at the base fitness center. This program, safety officials say, brings home the shocking reality of the deadly consequences of drinking and driving. The program is a briefing and a hands-on participation presentation aimed at Airmen ages 18 through 26 regardless of rank, said Scott Eck, 20th Fighter Wing safety flight. The program includes a non-traditional "shock" approach to alcohol awareness and anti-drinking and driving, he said. Using a high-impact video, it shows real-life footage from actual events to demonstrate how devastating drinking and driving can be. Also, there is an immersive, multi-screen, state-of-the-art "save a life" simulator that shows the audience participants actual experience from both the driver's view and a helicopter view, he said. The simulator is designed to show how alcohol affects reaction times and motor skills. Participants receive a ticket-type review showing violations committed during their simulation.
