Children on Shaw Air Force Base recently participated in the children's summer reading program at the McElveen Library June 15 to Aug. 7.

The children's summer reading program was designed to encourage children and teens to continue reading throughout the summer, even when school is out.

"Most children feel that they read all during the school year, and they shouldn't have to read during the summer," explained Tamara Collier, children's coordinator. "Research shows that children who are highly encouraged to read throughout scheduled school breaks will tend to thrive more academically and socially. We initiated the summer reading program to help with this development."

The program was for children and their families who have access to McElveen Library, but not just specifically geared towards the military families. Retired, civilian and contractor families were welcome to attend as well.

The summer reading program has been a part of the McElveen Library since the opening of a library on Shaw.

The children were divided into teams, based on age and reading skill level. The reading teams competed against each other on a weekly basis. Each week, the children, also called readers, were given a reading goal and a weekly challenge to complete.

The weekly challenges consisted of readers participating in at least one program at the McElveen Library. At the end of each week, the team that completed their reading goal and the most weekly challenges was rewarded with a prize.

Every Friday, all turned in their weekly reading log to the library. Reading logs were tallied, and the team that read the most minutes and attended the most programs, was the winner for the week.

At the end of the summer, grand prizes were awarded to the team who accumulated the most points throughout the summer, and a grand prize was given to the individual who achieved and completed the most reading goals and weekly challenges.
