A milestone in Shaw's and South Carolina's history will occur Monday as officials break ground for the new Headquarters, 3rd Army and Army Central Command here at 10 a.m. The 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw's host unit, is also hosting the ceremony.

In 2005, a Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that the United States Army relocate the ARCENT headquarters here since the United States Air Force's Central Command headquarters is already at Shaw.

ARCENT headquarters will move from facilities at Fort McPherson and Fort Gillam, Ga. to Shaw. The ARCENT headquarters will be distributed primarily among three separate facilities: a command control facility; a Headquarters, Headquarters Company facility; and the tactical equipment maintenance facility. The complex will be built on Shaw's southeast side on what was previously forested ground.

The main facility will be approximately 320,000 sq. ft. and will support 1,500 personnel from the major staff groups. The HHC will be approximately 25,000 sq. ft. and will support approximately 50 personnel from the staffing groups. The TEMF will be approximately 15,000 sq. ft. and will support approximately 15 personnel for administration and equipment maintenance. The structure will include repair bays, a administrative offices, and secure storage area.

The energy-efficient buildings will be designed to meet silver level requirements of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The estimated cost of the new facility is $92 million.

Like the Air Force's Central Command also headquartered at Shaw, ARCENT will focus upon the Middle East area of operations.

The BRACC required the Army to have the new headquarters operational by September 2011. Soldiers are expected to begin arriving at Shaw next summer and many will bring families, eventually adding an estimated 3,400 people, Army officials said.
