So, how is Shaw Air Force Base doing these days? That question can be answered by Lt. Gen. Loren Reno, Air Force deputy chief of staff for logistics, and Shaw AFB commanders as they toured the base May 6, 2009.

General Reno got to see many different work areas at Shaw, and received briefings from Airmen on how they have improved their shops' overall effectiveness by using Air Force Smart Operations of the 21st Century. He also tested the Airmen's knowledge of their jobs. Airman 1st Class Jason Clarkson, 20th Security Forces Squadron, was asked to give a post briefing to General Reno. He did. "This was one of the best post briefings I've heard!" said General Reno as he gave Airman Clarkson a coin.

As General Reno made his rounds, he closely examined each workplace, inspected maintenance records on equipment, spoke with the Airmen and encouraged them to ask him questions. General Reno expressed his thoughts to each function area and made sure that everyone was preparing for the upcoming Operational Readiness Inspection. "How well you do on an ORI is something you never forget," the general said... "I still remember my first ORI."

Every Airman General Reno encountered was able to give information accurately and professionally, he said afterward. He witnessed how everyone strove for excellence and wanted to contribute to the Air Force mission. Before he left, General Reno made it clear that he was impressed by Shaw's performance and ability to complete the mission.
