Shaw Airmen responded to a simulated out-of-control fire while working in the Emergency Operations Center during a phase II operational readiness exercise on Tuesday.

Master Sgt. Adaly Lightsey, an exercise evaluation team member, placed a smoke machine in a back room of the EOC to simulate smoke from a fire and to watch how quickly and correctly the Airmen responded to a fire emergency.

The Airmen evacuated the building, and in the midst of accounting for all personnel and equipment, found that one of their own had suffered severe burns. EOC personnel provided the injured Airman first aid care.

The fire department arrived on scene and successfully extinguished the simulated fire, and the Airmen reported as required to their alternate location.

"Amidst all the chaos, I was treated immediately for my burns," said Senior Airman Amy Personius, who works in the Pediatrics Clinic as a member of the 20th Medical Operations Squadron and played the part of the burn victim. "Had this been a real-world situation, I know I would have received the treatment I needed."

Such events will be repeated often during the operational readiness inspection in June as inspectors from ACC evaluate the 20th Fighter Wing's ability to perform its war-time mission under realistic simulation.
