2008 Combined Federal Campaign kicks off

With the season of giving right around the corner, the Combined Federal Campaign gives Airmen here the opportunity to help others. The base's annual CFC began Sept. 23, and pledges will continue to be accepted through Nov. 7.

Through pledges, the CFC raises money for more than 2,000 organizations at the local, national and international levels. United Way of the Midlands serves as the Principal Combined Fund Organization for 11 counties in South Carolina including Sumter.

In 2007, Shaw donated a total of $158,699 through the CFC - a substantial increase from $151, 556 in 2006. Col. James Post, 20th Fighter Wing commander and the campaign host, approved this year's goal of $160,000.

John F. Kennedy established the CFC as the only authorized solicitation of federal employees in the workplace. Seeing a need to bring the diversity of fundraising efforts under one umbrella, federal employees created a single campaign for the CFC once a year.

"By allowing employees to select the organizations of their choice from a brochure and to make their contributions through payroll deductions, the CFC continues to be the largest and most successful workplace fundraising model in the world," said Tammy Huddle, CFC manager at United Way of the Midlands.

Only those agencies approved by the Office of Personnel Management or the Local Eligibility Committee are eligible for designations through the CFC. Shaw Friends, part of the Airmen and Family Readiness Center, is an approved CFC charity for 2008.

Federal employees may designate up to five agencies of their choice.
Additional information about the Midlands Area CFC can be found at www.MidlandsAreaCFC.org.

The CFC brochure is available to download from the Web site and contains an alphabetical index of agencies. A charity search engine is located under the charity information tab on the Web site.
