Human error is commonly the culprit in accidents and mishaps. There is no formula to ensure 100 percent safety; however, it is always the goal of the Air Force to perform every task with the safest approach possible.

Shaw AFB dedicated May 2 as Safety Day, to educate and remind members of the importance of safety prior to the 101 critical days of summer.

Col. James Post, 20th Fighter Wing commander, spoke at the opening commander's call of Safety Day about the challenges the wing faced in the past, to include drunk driving and underage drinking.

Colonel Post also complimented the members on being what he said to be "the finest fighter wing in the U.S. Air Force."

"Your teamwork, support, discipline, professionalism and attention to detail are superb," he said. "Let's learn from our mistakes, let's discuss our mistakes and have a great year for the rest of 2008."

Shaw members were invited to discuss and learn about various safety information at booths set up around the hangar after the commander's call. Representatives from various agencies specializing in everything from motorcycle safety to installing child car seats came to speak.

The day also included a performance by the Sumter High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble Team, whose presentation was dedicated to Air Force members and was inspired by the sound of jets. The 20th Force Support Squadron also provided a free hot dog lunch.

Members were also encouraged to continue Safety Day at their workplace by discussing safe practices.

"Hopefully we can leave today with some lessons learned," said Lt. Col. James Wilkerson, 20th FW chief of safety.
