Activate Sumter, formally known as Sumter-Shaw Shrinkdown, kicked off Jan. 14. The free 7-week weight-loss program gives healthy living, exercise information and support to participants.

More than 25 Shaw members have signed up for the program at the Health and Wellness Center so far and 550 have signed up throughout the Sumter community, said Adrienne Brantley, 20th Aeromedical-Dental Squadron HAWC manager.

"I signed up for the program because I want to lose a few pounds and I've had success in the past with this program," said Ms. Felicia White. "Plus, I also enjoy the new recipes."

New recipes are healthy alternatives and include things such as white bean and chicken chili.

"I'm hoping to lose 45 pounds through the program," said Pamela Gardner. "I am doing this so I can have more energy to keep up with my kids."

Every week the participants can check on their weight-loss status by performing a weigh-in at the HAWC, the fitness center or Sumter's YMCA, Ms. Brantley said.

Activate Sumter coincides with the other YMCA programs throughout the country, she said. After the seven weeks participants can continue to weigh in once a month at the YMCA. The HAWC and the fitness center will discontinue Activate Sumter weigh-ins after the seven weeks.

Unlike last year, all information on nutrition, exercise and health education for participants is available online at http://www.activatesumter.org, Ms. Brantley said. Participants can also go online and log in activity information, track their weight loss progress, view "Health Talks" agenda and check out recipes.

"Anyone who wants to participate in the Activate Sumter program can still register at the HAWC," Ms. Brantley said. "It's never too late to get started."
