Where to dispose used cooking oil

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --  Now that Thanksgiving has passed, many Shaw personnel may have an abundance of used cooking oil from frying turkeys.

Shaw members are encouraged to dispose of their used cooking oil in the vat located at the Shaw Bowling Center, said Mark Hall, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron pollution prevention manager.

"Please do not dispose of used cooking oil and other fats down drains," he said. "Fats, oils, and greases cause pipeline blockage and is the leading cause of sanitary sewer overflows at Shaw. For smaller amounts of oils, fats and grease, use dry disposal methods such as newspapers and paper towels."
