The 4th Battlefield Coordination Detachment received a new commander in a change of command ceremony in Hangar 1200 Aug. 29.

Army Col. Kevin Felix took command from Army Col. Glenn Harp, who is now the deputy commander of the Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Ala.

Prior to coming to Shaw, Colonel Felix served as the executive assistant to the assistant of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The 4th BCD is the Army's liaison to the 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces. As one of the Army's five BCDs responsible for supporting joint operations, the 4th BCD organizes, trains and equips to support combat missions in the U.S. CENTCOM area of responsibility.

The ceremony was the first change of command for the 4th BCD, which was created July, 2006, and activated at Shaw in Oct., 2006.

"This change of command is important to everyone. It's a change of responsibilities, leadership and conditions," said Army Lt. Gen. Steven Whitcomb, 3rd Army U.S. Army Central and Coalition Forces Land Component Command commanding general. "The unit never stays the same when a new commander arrives."

In Aug., 2006, the 4th BCD deployed and assumed full responsibility for coordinating air support and airspace deconfliction throughout the U.S. CENTCOM AOR supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and operations in the Horn of Africa.

In Aug., 2007, the 4th BCD returned to Shaw and is now taking a break from combat operations to reintegrate and train.

"After attending school and receiving training, the 4th BCD will get ready to go out again," Colonel Felix said. "It's always the mission."
