Shaw dedicated its new, state-of-the-art library Apirl 27 in memory of W. Ashby "Mayor Bubba" McElveen Jr., well-known former mayor of Sumter.

In addition to having served as the City of Sumter mayor, Mr. McElveen served eight years as a member of Sumter City Council. He was also a long-time member of the Sumter-Shaw Community Council and served on the Sumter YMCA board of directors.

"Today's dedication is a just small token of what we can give back to great American and great people like Mayor Bubba," said Col. James Post, 20th Fighter Wing commander.

The $3.7-million, 16,500 square-foot library has a general book collection area, rooms for children and teens, two conference rooms, 50 reference and patron computers and a coffee shop.

One of the goals is to obtain the Air Force five-star status, said Capt. Kenneth Marshall, 20th Services Squadron Combat Support fight commander. Shaw already achieved the four-star status in 2006, by providing excellent customer service, great facilities, he said.

The new library meets the mission of providing resources for military members and their families to obtain their own educational goals, said Lisa Romans, McElveen Library director.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
