The Shaw Motorcycle Riders Association hosted its first spring bike show March 17 at the base exchange parking lot.

People who attended the event saw basic putt-around bikes all the way up the high-end custom bikes with cruisers and sport bikes in between, said Master Sgt. Michael Dugas, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron superintendent and SMRA treasurer.

The show's purpose was to promote motorcycle safety and raise public awareness of motorcycles, Sergeant Dugas said.

"Another purpose of the bike show was to share camaraderie with other riders and to show off your bike," said Tech. Sgt. Patty Gill, 20th EMS vehicle NCO in charge and a SMRA road captain.

The SMRA awarded plaques for six different categories. Master Sgt. Martin McGrew won best in show; Staff Sgt. Sean Andersen, best cruiser; Staff Sgt. Mike Gifford, best sport bike; Tech. Sgt. Kerri Brooks, best modification; Master Sgt. Michael Dugas, best touring, and Tech. Sgt. Mike Ventura, best custom.

The judging was strictly by popular vote because the SMRA likes to get the riders and the crowd involved, Sergeant Dugas said.

"The event turned out pretty good. I think the turnout would have been better if the weather wasn't as cold and it wasn't St. Patrick's Day, but we had some fun comparing rides and trading stories," Sergeant Dugas said. "Anytime you can get together with a group of people with similar interests, you're bound to have a good time."

The SMRA is planning its next bike show for Oct. 20.
