Shaw Airmen will plant trees, pick up litter, and paint and power wash buildings and parking areas from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Sumter community as part of the "Finding the U in Sumter" campaign sponsored by the Sumter Chamber of Commerce, the City of Sumter and the base.

"This is a way to give back to the Sumter community while helping enhance the relationship between Shaw and Sumter," said Col. Mike Byrne, 20th Fighter Wing vice commander. "It's important that we at Shaw work hand-in-hand with the Sumter community and continue to build strong ties."

"Our goal is to have 50 percent of Shaw participate in the event," said project officer 1st Lt. Erica Etter, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron readiness flight commander and the Shaw Company Grade Officers Council president. More than 6,000 military members are assigned to Shaw.

"Each squadron will be given a dedicated area to clean, which includes the Shaw overpass, Alice Drive, the Aquatic Center, downtown Sumter and Highway 15," Lieutenant Etter said.

To volunteer, Airmen should contact their unit's representative.
