SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- As a Prevention Coordination Specialist, Dr. Frederica Norman plays a critical role in strengthening resilience and readiness across the Shaw community. Her work focuses on developing prevention programs tailored to the unique challenges military members and their families face, including suicide prevention, family and workplace violence, and substance misuse.
As a military spouse of 25 years, Norman has experienced firsthand the hardships of military life—deployments, frequent relocations, and the emotional toll of uncertainty. Tragically, she has known families impacted by suicide, which fueled her commitment to building a culture where seeking help is not only encouraged, but expected.
Dr. Norman’s work directly supports suicide prevention by educating the community, empowering bystanders to act, reducing stigma, and connecting people to life-saving resources.
“Suicide awareness,” she says, “is the foundation upon which all other prevention initiatives are built.”
From promoting open conversations to sharing resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Norman stresses the importance of early awareness, access to help, and continuous education. Her programs also emphasize self-care and mental wellness as critical components of mission readiness.
While Suicide Prevention Month is vital, Dr. Norman urges individuals and communities to stay engaged all year. From learning to recognize warning signs to creating safe spaces and breaking down stigma, we all play a part in building a resilient force. Her work supports Shaw’s focus on resiliency and readiness by equipping service members and their families with tools to overcome adversity, ensuring they stay mission-ready and personally resilient.
“Suicide prevention is a collective responsibility. By standing together, we create a culture where asking for help is seen as a strength; not a weakness.” said Norman.
