Income tax filing season is just around the corner. While traditionally viewed as an aggravating and unnecessarily complex process, the 20th Fighter Wing legal office is committed to making this experience as painless as possible.

The 20th FW legal office will work hand-in-hand with Volunteer Income Tax Assistants to provide free tax assistance-to include electronic filing-for eligible active duty members, dependents and retirees.

On Feb. 3, the tax center will begin providing services for enlisted personnel E-6 and below and officers O-3 and below by appointment only. On March 1, the tax center will begin accepting appointments for E-7s, O-4s and retirees. Due to a limited number of volunteers, the tax center will not be able to provide services to personnel E-8 and above or O-5 and above.

Additionally, please note that Lee Joyce, who has run the tax center for the past several years, has retired outside the local area and is no longer available to assist the tax center.
The tax center plans to provide services Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Feb. 3 through the month of April, and will be located in Building 1118 in the old Pass and Registration office next to Rickenbacker's Café.

Although VITAs have earned the necessary certifications and received up-to-date tax training through the Internal Revenue Service, they may not have the training necessary to prepare more complex tax returns. As such, the tax center may refuse to prepare a tax return if it requires training beyond that which VITAs have already received.

In order to make appointments as painless as possible, the tax center requires customers to bring copies of social security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents, a Form W-2 from each employer, Form 1099s and any other supporting documentation for additional sources of income, and childcare expense information including the name, social security number and address of the childcare provider to their filing appointment.

Additional items to consider bringing include powers of attorney if filing on someone else's behalf and a voided check if the filer wants a direct deposit of their return.

To schedule an appointment, call the tax center at DSN 965-8780 or (803) 895-8780.
