Members of Team Shaw, along with hundreds of veterans and community members gathered in downtown Sumter, South Carolina, for a Veterans Day parade, Nov. 11.

During the city's first Veterans Day parade since 1987, there was a strong showing of support from the community as they lined the street cheering and waving flags at the parade's participants.

Representing Team Shaw were Airmen and Soldiers in uniform, along with several vehicles and the base honor guard leading the parade.

"It makes me feel happy that we have so many people here to support Veterans Day celebrations like this," said Noah Miller, a Crestwood High School ROTC student.

After the parade, a ceremony was held on the front lawn of the Sumter Courthouse to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. The guest speaker was Chief Master Sgt. Christopher McKinney, 20th Fighter Wing command chief.

"Many of you no longer wear the uniform, but serve our community in other capacities," said McKinney. "Today we intentionally honor those who have paved the way for people like me who currently serve and we now stand on your shoulders. Your legacy of selfless service is a beacon that lights our path."

During the ceremony, national volunteer organization Quilts of Valor presented more than 40 handmade quilts to veterans in attendance.

Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to a meet-and-greet behind the courthouse with displays and food.
