The Shaw Commissary hosted the second annual Healthy Lifestyle Festival here, July 16-18.

Held at commissaries worldwide by the Defense Commissary Agency, the festival is part of the DoD campaign to ensure a fit and active military community.

"The goal is to increase attention and to be more mindful of the choices you're making," said Janine Reinholtz, 20th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Health Promotions registered dietitian. "We're trying to encourage people to think, 'I have to exercise for X amount of minutes per week just for heart health.'"

Commissaries partnered with local farmer's markets, recreation services, dietitians, and base exchanges to coordinate the event.

This year's theme for the festival was "Shop Healthy! Eat Healthy! Be Healthy!"

The key to everything is that it has to start at home, said Danny Danielson, Shaw Commissary director. It's easy to talk about eating healthy, but having the want and desire to start exercising and kick bad eating habits is essential.

Staying healthy and fit to fight is important for Airmen so they can be combat ready and world-wide deployable at a moment's notice.
