The 51st Intelligence Squadron held an Assumption of Command ceremony here,  July 10.

The squadron was reactivated in February, 2015, after 31 years of inactivation, and was formerly known as the 21st Reconnaissance Technical Squadron.

"Today is a celebration of the creation of a new squadron in the United States Air Force," said Capt. Jasen Little, deputy flight commander, during the ceremony.

During the ceremony, the 51st IS guidon was handed to Lt. Col. Ryan O'Neal, 51st IS incoming commander, by Col. Michael Johanek, 365th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group commander.

"The flag is passed to the individual assuming command," said Little. "This gesture is accomplished in front of all members of a unit so that all members can see their new leader assume responsibility and position of authority.

As O'Neal took the squadron guidon it not only symbolized him assuming command of operations for the 51st IS, but the Airmen as well.

"Today is not just about me, but about (the Airmen) as well," said O'Neal. "Congratulations on becoming the Air Force's newest squadron. I challenge each and every one of you to make this become the best squadron in the Air Force. It's not about being a good wingman or teammate, but about us being a family."

O'Neal assumed command after being assigned to several AF Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance positions, from the  wing-level to Headquarters Air Force.

"I have great confidence that Lt. Col. O'Neal is going to be an incredible commander," said Johanek. "He is going to lead the men and women of the 51st IS to do great things."
