The 20th Medical Group held an emergency management technician rodeo here, May 1.

The rodeo was designed to increase Air Force EMT proficiency and promote esprit de corp through competition.

"The training enhanced our Air Force medic's capacity to deliver emergency medical treatment and to garner continuing education units, which maintains our EMT Licensure," said Master Sgt. Taliah Wilkerson, 20th Medical Operations squadron family health flight chief.

During the competition nine teams of three participated in various physical activities, such as performing CPR, callisthenic exercises, and mental activities; such as building an Airman's Creed puzzle, trying to complete it as efficiently and quickly as possible.

"EMTs have to maintain physical fitness and sustain clinical skills competency to ensure readiness for expeditionary and in-garrison missions, providing emergency medical treatment," said Lt. Col. Heather Perez, 20th MDG chief nurse. "Their skills impact the lives of our Airmen and their families by giving compassionate, high quality care."

With training events like this, the 20th MDG enhances their combat readiness.

"The 20th MDG is focusing on being a high-reliability organization through being transparent and identifying potential areas of improvement to help create best practices," said Perez. "The safe and quality healthcare services Air Force medical technicians provide is a critical component of the U.S. Military Health System and will continue to be so as we forge our way into a healthier, stronger future."

This training not only better prepares them for scenarios that could be found here, but also prepares them for an Air Force-wide competition.

"Hopefully, the 20th MDG will be able to put together a team to then compete at the Air Force level EMT Rodeo, which will be hosted at Cannon AFB, New Mexico in September," said Wilkerson.

EMTs are in charge of ensuring a quick response to any medical emergency, and being prepared and practicing medical techniques will ensure a better outcome.
