The 20th Fighter Wing is holding a cyber-security week here, April 27 through May 1.

The purpose of the week is to increase 20th FW and Ninth Air Force network security and establish sustainable maintenance and procedures in an ever-changing cyber battle space.

"Every day we face cyber threats from inside and outside the gate," said Capt. Andrew Butler, 20th Communication Squadron operations flight commander. "A week focused on cyber security will help us ensure each member of the 20th FW knows that cyber security is everyone's mission."

Across the wing there are some computer systems as old as 1998, according to the 20th CS. If systems are not replaced with newer systems they do not always accept images, patches, or updates, which raise the probability of becoming a targeted system.

"The 20 CS has specific and targeted efforts to improve the security on our network," said Butler. "In many cases, our work will impact our fellow units across the base.  This is because the work we will do could cause periods of time with restricted network services to your unit during Cyber Security Week, but more importantly, over the long term, these upgrades to our networks will fortify us against cyber threats."

Cyber awareness does not just fall on one person, it is everyone's responsibility to ensure cyber security is maintained at all times.

"We face risks every day in cyberspace that threaten our ability to carry out our mission," said Col. Stephen Jost, 20th FW commander. "With your help we could mitigate these risks."

Throughout the week the 20th CS will be going around to different units and meeting with information assurance officers to resolve any issues.

If there are any questions about cyber week or cyber security contact the 20th CS at 803-895-2666 option two.
