Practicing winter safety

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --  As temperatures in the east start to decrease, members of Team Shaw could begin preparing for the winter months ahead.

During the winter months it is important for Airmen to know how to maintain their house as well as how to stay safe on the road.

On average, more than 116,800 are injured in winter related vehicle accidents annually, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.

"While on the road, drivers should be following all posted speed limit signs and other signs such as 'deer crossing' or 'caution bridge ices'," said Tech. Sgt. Biagi Borrero, 20th Fighter Wing ground safety craftsman. "Also drivers should be mindful of the route they are taking so they know where they are going to get gasoline and take a break to ensure they get to their destination safely."

While driving Airmen should be wary of ice spots on the road, added Borrero.

During the winter months, Airmen should also make sure their homes are taken care of.

"Frozen pipes can lead to severe water damage to the house itself and all personal belongings within the house," said Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Campbell, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron water distribution NCO in charge. "You should disconnect garden hoses from outside hose bibbs, insulate all exposed pipes in attics or crawl spaces, and ensure you leave the heat on inside the house."

For worst case scenarios, Airmen should leave faucets dripping to prevent the pipes from freezing, added Campbell.
