The 20th Security Forces Squadron held a Defender's Edge Challenge here, Oct. 8.

The purpose of the event was to challenge Shaw's Defenders both physically and mentally through a series of obstacles.

"As far as I know, no event has been hosted like this at Shaw," said Chief Master Sgt. Scott Henshaw, 20th SFS manager. "I've hosted events like this before at my old bases, so it's nice to be able to bring it here."

Eight teams of four Airmen fought against the clock to complete 10 obstacles to the best of their abilities.

"In addition to their Comprehensive Airman Fitness training, security forces also teaches our Airmen how to better react in a high-stress environment that they may face while deployed," said Henshaw. "So with the stress of competition you can truly learn the extent of your abilities versus your perceived capabilities."

The scenarios were based on those that could be faced in a deployed environment. Some of the challenges tested the Airmen's shooting ability, knowledge of equipment, and fitness level.

"The hardest event was the team pain challenge," said Airman 1st Class Colbain Austin, 20th SFS entry controller. "We had to flip tires, carry heavy ammo and water cans, and we had to do four person pushups."

Though the Airmen faced many rigorous tasks, a plus side could still be seen in the event.

"Events like this are definitely beneficial to our squadron," said Lt. Col. S. Nathan Puwalowski, 20th SFS commander. "They help build morale amongst the squadron and it gives the Airmen a chance to hone their skills and be ready to fight."

Awards were given out to the top three teams, top team leader, top team member, and best shooter, followed by a squadron-wide picnic.
