Shaw AFB 5/6 hosted the first-ever Team Shaw NCO induction ceremony here, Oct. 2.

The purpose of the ceremony was to "induct" and recognize six staff sergeants and 15 senior airmen entering the NCO tier.

"NCOs are the backbone of this Air Force," said Tech. Sgt. Thyiatira Singleton, 20th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron unit training manager. "We are responsible for becoming technical experts, taking care of America's Airmen, and ensuring the mission at hand is met through maintaining good order and discipline."

The Airmen who were inducted either recently got promoted to staff sergeant or have a line number.

"I wish we could have more Airmen out here but most are at Airman Leadership School or deployed," said Singleton.

During the ceremony, Airmen walked under an archway of swords presented by the 20th Force Support Squadron honor guard and received a plaque from Col. Bill Jones, 20th Fighter Wing vice commander, where he congratulated them on their accomplishment.

"I couldn't be more proud to see you all up here today receiving your plaques," said Jones. "You are now NCOs, and you are now responsible for your Airmen, their lives, and their family's lives. It's a big responsibility, but I know you're up for the challenge."

Retired Chief Master Sgt. Michael Williams was a guest speaker at the ceremony.

"Inductees, this promotion isn't about you," said Williams. "It is about the mission and the Airmen. As NCOs you are now in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly."

Airmen can deploy at a moment's notice in which they will turn to and rely on their supervisors for support and guidance.

"We need great NCOs in our Air Force," said Singleton. "Without them, our Air Force will not be able to withstand and overcome the constant challenges we face."

In order to keep the Air Force the superior air power it is, it needs strong and knowledgeable NCOs to lead and mold younger Airmen to defend their country.
