The 2014 intramural flag football season "kicked-off" here, Sept. 3.

The league consists of nine teams competing for the Shaw AFB flag football championship, which is scheduled to take place in the middle of October.

The intramural sports program is an Air Force-wide program governed by Air Force Instruction 34-266, which gives service members the opportunity to interact and engage with supervisors and other personnel on base.

"While you're at work you tend to forget that your supervisors are humans too," said Airman 1st Class Aaron Smith, 20th Contracting Squadron contracting administrator. "So it's awesome to be able to come out here, have fun, and truly bond with them."

Flag football, along with other intramural sports, hosted by the 20th Force Support Squadron, are an after work activity created to promote participation, sportsmanship, physical conditioning, and esprit de corps.

While Shaw is home to three fighter squadrons, housing 82F-16CM Fighting Falcons, making it one of the largest fighter bases in the world, Airmen could spend long hours working.

"Some Airmen could work up to 60 hours a week, it could be extremely tiring on them," said Charles Glover, 20th FSS fitness and sports director. "So programs like this give them an opportunity to relieve any stress, get away from work and create new friendships."

Though the season has already begun, Airmen can still sign up by contacting the 20th FSS Fitness and Health Center at 803-895-2789.
