Airmen are the Air Force's most valuable asset; to protect that asset the Air Force has utilized the Critical Days of Summer safety campaign to disseminate safety information to Airman throughout the summer.

Labor Day is only a few days away, that last bit of summer before fall spreads across the country; potentially that last chance to barbeque, or go to the beach.

Airmen may be traveling across the world this Labor Day, and travel safety should be taken into account before any plans are made.

"If you're yawning, nodding off or can't focus, then don't get on the road," said Staff Sgt. Zachary Hassay, 20th Security Forces Squadron standards and evaluations technician. "If you experience these symptoms while driving, pull over safely and try alternative methods to safely arrive at your destination."

Alternative methods include taking a 15-20 minute nap, having a passenger take over driving, or stopping to do some exercises to refresh the body.

With Labor Day being a national holiday, the roads are typically busier; being alert can be a big factor, when kids are out playing and families are traveling, it's important to be a defensive driver, said Senior Airman Whitney Dodson, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter.

In addition to not driving tired and being alert, be sure to check your vehicle's tire pressure and oil levels. Check with your vehicle's manufacturer to determine the recommended amounts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study which found that five percent of vehicle accidents in the United States are caused by the incorrect tire pressure. While five percent isn't an astronomical figure, it proves that under and over inflated tires are causes of accidents.

While the roads may be busier during the long weekend, the skies overhead are sure to have an increased amount of travelers as well.

The Transportation Security Administration advises travelers to arrive at their flight's departure point an hour ahead of boarding times, prepare a quart-sized clear plastic bag filled with three ounce bottles of liquids, and have their identification readily accessible.

Labor Day weekend is the last official weekend of summer; ensure it's a safe one for wingmen. Take the time to make sure safety is considered and effective precautionary measures are in place.
