New vice commander arrives at Shaw

Col. William "Bill" Jones took over as the 20th Fighter Wing vice commander here, April 9, 2014.

Jones began his military career at the age of 17 when he joined the US. Army Reserve and worked as a flight operations specialist.

From there, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1992, and went on to the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Commissioning into active duty in 1993, Jones worked as a computer programmer. Since then he has served as a squadron commander and a deputy operations group commander.

Jones also received a Masters Degree in Military Operational Art and Science from Air University in 2005.

He is a command pilot and instructor with more than 2,000 flying hours.

Before coming to Shaw AFB, he was 612th Air and Space Operations Center, Combat Operations Division deputy chief, Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.

Jones and his wife Leah of 23 years are excited to be at Shaw AFB, he said.

Not only is Jones looking forward to the south, he is also ready to help maintain a strong 20th Fighter Wing.

"My primary goal is to support our commander's vision, intent and his goals," said Jones. "I'm also looking forward to positively impacting the lives of our Airmen and their families and continuing to foster the relationship we have with the local community."
