Army Chinooks stop at Shaw to refuel

Three Army Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters with Company B, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., stopped at Shaw Aug. 9.

The three helicopters stopped to refuel on their way to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La.

The first CH-47s were built in the early 1960s and newer models have been released throughout the years. The CH-47F has been used by the Army since 2006 as a heavy cargo helicopter. It is a tandem-rotor helicopter powered by two turbo shaft engines that produce almost 5,000 horsepower. It is capable of reaching speeds of 175 miles per hour and lifting up to 21,000 pounds.
