SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Col. Stephen Jost, 20th Fighter Wing commander, released the 2015 Economic Impact Statement, Jan. 17, which showed Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina’s approximately $910 million financial influence on the Midlands during fiscal year 2015.

In FY 2015, which lasted from Oct. 1, 2014, to Sept. 30, 2015, Shaw sustained more than 2,600 local jobs which had an estimated combined payroll of $95 million.

“Shaw is an economic engine that drives the financial health of the Midlands,” said Jost. “Providing more than 10,000 jobs altogether, we are considered the second-largest employer in South Carolina. We're very proud to create such a tremendous, positive influence on the state."

An EIS provides information on the 20th FW’s mission, resources, and economic impact on the local community. The latter is calculated by identifiable off-base, local area spending. Shaw’s local area includes everything in a 50-mile radius from the center of Sumter, S.C.

“Throughout the past 75 years, Sumter and the local area have supported Shaw Air Force Base,” said Jost. “The study shows the enormity of our annual economic contribution in the community. In order to accomplish Team Shaw’s mission, it’s important we maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the community.”
