The 20th Force Support Squadron Wateree Recreation Area hosted the 8th Annual Beautify Wateree Day near Camden, South Carolina, March 19.

Currently, Beautify Wateree has saved Shaw over $120 thousand, allotting the 20th FSS funds that can be used for new amenities to improve morale.

The event provided 225 Team Shaw members from various units and ranks the opportunity to support the community, develop teamwork, and take pride in ownership of Wateree.

"It's really inspiring to see everyone come out and come together from different organizations and get the job done," said Staff Sgt. Amber Martinez, 20th Medical Support Squadron medical material noncommissioned officer in charge. "We're all just coming together as one team to make this community a better place.”

Shaw representatives, who raked and bagged the debris left behind from floods and winter weather, were treated to a barbeque provided by the Wateree staff for their hard work and dedication.

“I can't thank everybody enough," said Curt Marshall, 20th FSS Wateree Recreation Area manager. "Their time, their efforts; it means so much. My staff and I can't do it without them. That's what I call pride in ownership."

Taking pride in ownership and cleaning up the grounds is key to helping preserve Lake Wateree for future generations.

Located 34 miles north of Shaw, Wateree offers a variety of activities including camping, fishing, and boating for service members and their families throughout the year.

Airmen supporting the community and volunteering their time to clean up Wateree is one way to demonstrate the core value of service before self.
