Drop-off stations are scheduled to be set up around the base to accept and dispose prescription drugs for Drug Take-Back Day at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Drug Take-Back Day, Team Shaw members can bring any and all prescription drugs, whether expired or no longer in use, and drop them off in any drug take-back box no questions asked.

“Some of the biggest reasons you want to dispose of drugs properly is so you don’t have expired drugs at your home that could easily be abused,” said Staff Sgt. Martina Martin, 20th Security Forces Squadron operation support noncommissioned officer in charge. “Also, you don’t want children to be able to get those drugs.”

After the prescriptions are dropped into the drug take-back boxes, they are sent to the Drug Enforcement Administration to be disposed of properly, said Martin.

Bob Healy, 20th Security Forces Squadron investigation superintendent, said the “we won’t ask” policy gives people a safe way to dispose of prescription drugs.

Dropping prescription drugs off in a drug take-back box also benefits the environment because flushing drugs down the toilet could possibly contaminate the local water supply.

Martin said people should use this opportunity to get rid of any kind of prescription drug that they no longer need or use.

Drug take-back boxes are slated to be located at: 3rd Army Patton Hall main entrance, 20th Medical Group main entrance, Shaw Base Exchange main entrance, Dining Facility main entrance, and Mission Support Group building 1118 main entrance.
