Do you have your biker's attitude? Published March 13, 2009 By Scott Eck 20th Fighter Wing Safety Office SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Of all the things I like about South Carolina, one of the things I enjoy the most is the great weather. Of course there are days when the weather is not so great, but the amount of warm, sunny days certainly makes up for it. Because of this, you always see motorcycle riders cruising here and there almost year round. About a week or so ago, I took a short motorcycle ride around the area. As I looked down the road I was traveling, I noticed two sport bike riders in the distance in the opposite lane, traveling at a high rate of speed. They were cutting in and out of traffic and one even popped a wheelie. As they passed me I also noticed their lack of helmets and other life-saving personal protective equipment. It was readily apparent to me they did not have their biker's attitude. After I completed my ride I began to think about MY attitude towards riding. How often have I taken for granted an automobile operator will see me? How many times have I taken a chance because I have the right of way? How many times have I skipped a good pre-ride inspection because I was in a hurry? Unfortunately, more times than I want to admit. Riding a motorcycle takes skill, knowledge and a proper biker's attitude. A proper biker's attitude means you'll wear your personal protective equipment, you'll inspect your bike before and after each ride, you'll complete mandatory rider's training and you'll ride smartly and safely. I've checked my biker's attitude ... have you?
