Civil Air Patrol members spend a day in the Air Force Published June 29, 2006 By Kimberly Champagne 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- While their friends looked for cool places to beat the heat, some of tomorrow’s military leaders found a different kind of “cool” June 21 when they visited Shaw as part of a 9-day summer camp. About 120 South Carolina Civil Air Patrol cadets began their day with flights on military aircraft. A C-17 from Charleston Air Force Base and a C-130 from McEntire Air National Guard station took the students up to show them the operations side of the Air Force. The cadets visited the Logistics Readiness Squadron and learned about military convoy vehicles and weapons. In addition to the equipment, they learned about the war in Iraq from someone who has been there, Senior Airman Heather Moran, 20th LRS vehicle operator, shared her experience fighting the war on terror as a convoy driver. “This was a great tour. I enjoyed talking to real heroes,” said Tyler Huff, CAP cadet. “There is no way to thank them for what they do. Veterans deserve more respect then anyone in the country.” Their last stop was at the 20th Security Forces K-9 unit where they learned about the capabilities of the military working dogs and their handlers. The CAP is about helping kids get off on the right foot and giving them the discipline to succeed in life, said G. Mark Rutan, S.C. Civil Air Patrol liaison officer.
