It started with an e-mail requesting more information about applying for Tops in Blue, but in a matter of days it turned into the chance of a lifetime for one Shaw member.

Capt. Brian Matchik, 20th Services Squadron, was selected Feb. 5 to join Tops in Blue as a trumpet player. He is the second 20th SVS member to be selected this year.

“We are very proud to have two members of our services team touring with the prestigious Tops in Blue. It is an honor to be associated and work with these two talented individuals,” said Jim Vose, 20th SVS deputy chief.

Tops in Blue, based at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, is an active-duty Air Force unit composed of vocalists, musicians and dancers. According to their Web site, www.afsv.af.mil, their mission is to entertain military personnel and their families worldwide. Since their beginning, Tops in Blue has performed at state fairs, festivals, air shows, military balls, six World’s Fairs and countless military bases worldwide.

The selection was a surprise to Capt. Matchik. He said he saw a Tops in Blue advertisement stating the team was still looking for members. He thought about applying, but decided to ask them about the application process. After his inquiry, a representative from Tops in Blue called him to answer his questions. His phone conversation turned into an application and it became the precursor to an audition. The next day, a Tops in Blue representative called him for an audition.

In less than 72 hours, Capt. Matchik went from viewing an ad to being asked to join the team. Before the month is up, he will join his new Tops in Blue teammates in Texas. He will play his trumpet an average of 10 hours per day.

Because of his love for music, Capt. Matchik said he has always wanted to do something music related. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education, and decided to further his education by earning a master’s degree in sports science management.

“A family friend inspired me to join the Air Force. I’ve always wanted to do something music related. Being selected for the team still feels surreal,” said Capt. Matchik.

“Capt. Matchik is a dedicated team player who pays close attention to detail. His strong musical background and his ability to play several instruments will enhance the Tops in Blue tour. He was a key player in providing essential services enhancing force readiness throughout the 20th SVS,” said Mr. Vose.
