U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Thomas Pipenberg, 79th Fighter Generation Squadron flight-line expediter, fires his weapon at the Combat Arms Training and Maintenance range at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Nov. 8, 2023. Pipenberg was among the first Airmen at Shaw to utilize the 3-D printed M-4 Magazine Speed Loading Ram (MMSLR) to load magazines during proficiency firing. The two pieces of the MMSLR are able to be printed within seven hours, expediting the acquisition process, and load times during proficiency training. The Viper Innovation Cell brought the MMSLR to Shaw AFB as part of the Air Force’s initiative to expand technologies by encouraging innovation and problem solving to individual and group problems. U.S. Air Force Airmen fire the M-4 carbine during proficiency training at the Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM) range at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Nov. 8, 2023. The Viper Innovation Cell and CATM teams collaborated to implement the use of a 3-D printed M-4 Magazine Speed Loading Ram (MMSLR) to reduce the time required to load a weapon. During a full round of firing, Airmen shoot upwards of 300 rounds, with the MMSLR, loading a full 30-round magazine can be completed in under a minute. A completed 3-D printed M-4 Magazine Speed Loading Ram (MMSLR) is staged inside the 3-D printer used to produce the device at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Nov. 8, 2023. The black main body hopper is printed with an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene filament; a durable plastic which is cost effective, easier to print and does not need to withstand much force during use. The white plunger component is a Polycarbonate filament; a stronger plastic able to handle the stress from thrusting ammunition into the metal M-4 magazine from the plastic MMSLR.
