Mila, a three legged kitten, begins interacting with her new companions, Mori the tabby and Madeline the Great Dane, at Columbia, S.C., after being rescued from a Chevy engine compartment. On June 26, 2012 she was discovered in a military vehicle at Shaw Air Force base, S.C., with head wounds and her leg broken in three places. After $2,000 in medical care and a leg amputation, she now lives with her rescuer, Senior Airman James Helmic, 20th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron weapons team chief and a native of Phillipsburg, N.J., and his wife, Airman 1st Class Katharina Helmic, 20th Maintenance Operation Squadron aircraft scheduler and a native of Omaha, Neb.
