Energy

100930-F-0000X-001 Many of us may not know that control of our energy consumption is one of the most effective ways we can conserve. Pictured here is Don Hurst. He works in the Civil Engineer Squadron Operations Flight as an HVAC EMCS* technician. On the screen to Don's left is a typical control graphic schematically showing air conditioning components in a building. Many of our buildings are centrally controlled and monitored so adjustments and troubleshooting can be performed in one location by a very skilled technician. A big reason for the control systems is to ensure buildings comply with our base energy letter/policy requiring 76 degree setpoint for cooling and 69 degrees for heating. Recently, Shaw received approval to modify the control room to accommodate a new control system. Our current system will only display one building's controls at a time; the new one will be capable of displaying multiple buildings at one time. This has the added benefit of allowing more than one technician to monitor buildings if need be. This is particularly important when troubleshooting. So when you see Mr. Hurst or any of the base HVAC techs, don't forget to thank them and remember to "make energy a consideration in all we do".
