Annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ
100428-F-6838W-035 SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Shown here is the Annual Volunteer BBQ at Memorial Lake on April 28, 2010. National Volunteer Week was created in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order to start the week as an annual celebration of volunteering; and every year since that time, each U.S. President, along with many government agency heads signed proclamations in observance of National Volunteer Week. The theme for National Volunteer Week, observed on April 18-24, is "Celebrating People in Action." The theme captures the meaning behind this signature week - honoring the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities. National Volunteer Week 2010 "Celebrating People in Action," presents an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government organizations alike to recognize the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service.
