SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Donald Cole Walters, son of fallen World War II B-17 pilot Capt. Donald Cole, shows photos of the memorial to his father near the French village Nieul-les-Saintes before being presented his father's watch at the Asheville, N.C. National Guard Armory Dec. 28, 2007. Capt. Cole stayed at the controls of his wounded B-17 that caught ablaze after being hit by German antiaircraft fire so that his nine fellow crewmembers could parachute to safety. He then steered the plane away from the French village of Nieul-les-Saintes, crashing it into a nearby field Jan. 5, 1944. In 2001, the residents of Nieul-les-Saintes had invited Donald Walters to France to attend a memorial dedication ceremony to his father for his sacrifice. (U.S. Air Force photo/A1C Kathrine McDowell)
