RED HORSE paves the road

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman John Carroll, 823rd Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers pavements and equipment operator journeyman, assigned to Hurlburt Field, Fla., shovels asphalt from a material transfer vehicle at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Sept. 10, 2014. Asphalt is kept at approximately 280 degrees Fahrenheit in order to maintain its malleability. The ‘tar’ smell that occurs during paving is caused by oils being released from within the hot asphalt as it gets smoothed on the road.
