Shaw Air and Space Expo seeking Sumter “Hometown Heroes”

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- The 20th Fighter Wing is searching for outstanding members of the Sumter community to be honored in conjunction with the Shaw Air and Space Expo scheduled for March 28-29, 2026, at Shaw AFB.

A free, family-friendly event, the Shaw Air and Space Expo will recognize hometown heroes who inspire service and selflessness in their community. One hero may be selected to fly in the back seat of an F-16 Fighting Falcon with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds on Friday, March 27.

“The unwavering support from the Sumter community truly lives up to its 'Uncommon Patriotism' motto and is invaluable,” said Maj. Andrew Jackson, Shaw Air and Space Expo director. “This bond enhances the lives of our Airmen, Soldiers, and families at Shaw Air Force Base and is integral to our mission readiness and success. We are proud to give back to our community heroes with our upcoming air show and look forward to being inspired alongside them.”

Heroes might include but are not limited to:

  • Wounded warriors (with impactful contributions beyond service)
  • Citizens who saved lives
  • Exceptional teachers
  • First responders who went above and beyond
  • Youth mentors and community volunteers
  • Advocates for at-risk children

Individuals that are not eligible for this program include military members, elected and appointed officials, unit honorary commanders and key spouses.
