SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Col. Francis Xavier, 20th Mission Support Group commander, and members of the local community plant a red maple sapling as part of an Earth Day observance April 20. The base-wide Earth Day program, "Keep Shaw AFB Clean," raised environmental concerns to encourage cleaner daily practices. In addition to the tree planting ceremony, other events included a base-wide cleanup and an electronic waste turn-in. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Josef E. Cole III) Back to roots
Team Shaw members partake in Earth Day events in 2007 and 2016. In 1970, after seeing the aftermath of a massive oil spill in California, then U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed Earth Day, an annual observance that grows awareness for the environment.
